Underpayments and overpayments
What happens when a customer sends too little or too much, and how to accept a payment or request the rest.
Customers sometimes send the wrong amount, often because an exchange took its own fee out of the transfer. 402pay handles both directions for you.
Your underpayment tolerance
A transfer short by no more than your tolerance, 0.5% unless you change it, counts as paid in full. Set it in checkout settings, from none up to 5%.
When a customer sends too little
The payment becomes Underpaid, and checkout shows the customer what's left to send, to the same address at the same rate. From the payment's details you can:
| Wait | The customer may still send the rest from checkout. |
|---|---|
| Request remainder | Once the quote has expired, create a new checkout for exactly what's left and share its link with the customer. |
| Accept as paid | Count what arrived as the full payment. The payment succeeds with that amount. |
When a customer sends too much
The payment succeeds, and the whole amount lands in your wallet. The payment's details show how much was overpaid, and your server gets a payment.overpaid webhook. If you want to return the extra, send it from your wallet. See refunds and disputes.
