How a payment works
From the moment a customer opens checkout to the moment the money is in your wallet.
Every payment on 402pay starts at a hosted checkout and ends in your wallet. Here's what happens in between.
Where a payment comes from
- A payment link: a customer opens a link you shared. Each customer who pays it makes a new payment.
- The API: your server creates a payment for an exact amount, with your own reference, and sends the customer to its checkout. See the accept a payment guide.
What happens at checkout
- The customer chooses to pay by crypto or by card.
- For crypto, they pick a coin and network. Checkout locks the exchange rate for 15 minutes, unless you've changed it, and shows the exact amount and a fresh address made just for this checkout. The customer sends the transfer there from any wallet or exchange.
Paying in crypto: the exact amount, the address and its QR code, and the time left on the rate. - For a card, they finish on a secure page where the card is charged. The payment is then delivered to your wallet as crypto.
- Once the transfer arrives and its network confirms it, the payment succeeds and the customer sees their receipt.
After it succeeds
The money is in your wallet, whole: nothing is taken out of it. You get an email if you've turned on payment alerts, and your server gets a payment.succeeded webhook if you've set one up. 402pay's fees go on your fee statement.
