Your recovery phrase and encryption password
What each one does, why we can't recover either, and how to keep them safe.
Your wallet has two secrets. Neither ever reaches 402pay in a form we can read, which is why your funds are yours alone, and why we can't recover either one.
What each one does
| Recovery phrase | 24 words that are your wallet. Anyone with them controls its funds, in any wallet app. It's made in your browser. |
|---|---|
| Encryption password | Locks your phrase in your browser before it's stored. You enter it to send funds, view the phrase or change the password. |
What we store
Only your phrase encrypted with your password, and the public keys we need to create a fresh address for each checkout. Decrypting happens in your browser. Your encryption password is never sent to us, and it's separate from the password you sign in with.
Keeping them safe
- Write your phrase down and keep it somewhere safe and offline, away from your computer.
- Keep your encryption password in a password manager.
- Never type your phrase into a website or share it with anyone, including us.
402pay will never ask for your recovery phrase or encryption password. Anyone who does is trying to take your funds.
If you lose one
| Lost the password | Set a new one with your recovery phrase. See change your encryption password. |
|---|---|
| Lost the phrase | View it again with your encryption password, in Wallet → Security, and save it this time. |
| Lost both | No one can recover the wallet or its funds. |
